The United States Navy has struck again—boarding and seizing an Iran-linked oil tanker deep in the Indian Ocean, signaling a widening enforcement zone beyond traditional hotspots. The vessel, identified as the M/T Tifani, was intercepted in international waters between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, far from the Persian Gulf’s usual flashpoints.
According to the Pentagon, the operation was a “right-of-visit maritime interdiction,” executed without resistance. The tanker—capable of carrying nearly two million barrels of crude—was boarded overnight on April 21. U.S. officials say the ship is tied to Iran’s so-called “dark fleet,” a network accused of covert ship-to-ship transfers designed to evade sanctions and sustain oil exports.
