A person arrives at enlightenment when they have transcended their subhuman, dark and primitive aspects of the self. After attaining self-knowledge, a truly realized master may choose to guide others on the path of self-discovery out of compassion and become a 'guru.' But in current scenario, we are witnessing that several unrealized, unscrupulous and untrained individuals are promoting themselves as masters, gurus and self-styled godmen and godwomen. The algorithmic and marketing tools of social media are helping them achieve this goal at the speed of lightning. The result is tragic.
Hi! This is Pulkit Sharma. I'm a clinical psychologist, psychoanalytic therapist, spiritual counselor and author based in Pondicherry, India. In my clinical practice, I have come across life stories of innocent individuals who surrendered to such pseudo masters hoping to find salvation but ended up with exploitation, emotional trauma and misery. 'The Yoga Vasistha' clearly mentions that a truly enlightened one seeks spiritual knowledge as an end in itself while the pseudo-realized uses spiritual teachings to promote his/her egoistic well-being and pleasure seeking. Therefore, one must learn to diagnose these pseudo-realized masters and keep away from them.
