Earth Quake — Earth Quake 1971 (USA, Heavy Psychedelic-Hard Rock)
A San Francisco, California, band formed in 1966 under the name Purple Earthquake. They initially performed in college town clubs and local dance halls. They were managed by Matthew King Kaufman, who signed them to A&M Records in 1970. Changing their name to Earth Quake, the band released their debut album in 1971. A year later, the label released their second album, Why Don't You Try Me?. Both albums failed to gain widespread recognition. Seeing and understanding the label's incompetence in handling the band, and experiencing disappointment, as well as winning a small settlement for the unauthorized use of their music in Sam Peckinpah's film "The Getaway," Kaufman founded his own label, Beserkley Records, in 1973, where Earth Quake released four more albums. In July 1973, former Copperhead guitarist Gary Phillips, also known as "Philippet," joined the band. The band lasted until the mid-1980s. Gary Phillips died in 2007 at the age of 59. John Doukas died on March 19, 2011, in South Africa at the age of 62.
