Relatives comb southern Mexico for vanished migrants
Relatives of missing migrants, supported by a regional network of migrant families, together with Mexico’s Commission for Missing People, carried out a search on Saturday for nearly 40 migrants from Honduras, Ecuador, Cuba and other countries who were last seen in southern Mexico in late 2024. The migrant group, which was in search for better living conditions, was last seen in December 2024 in the community of San Jose El Hueyate, on the coast of Chiapas. Some reports indicated they had taken a boat to venture out to sea, others suggested they were victims of a human-smuggling ring linked to organized crime.
"We see the fear in this community, truly, we see the fear because we know the location of our loved ones. But people are turning a blind eye, a deaf ear, and a mute mouth. They refuse to cooperate," said Oscar Hernandez Barahona, a Honduran man in the search of his brother Ricardo. "As a family, we demand that the competent authorities open a further investigation," he added.
The search operation included members of the military, the National Guard, state police and activists, who joined Saturday’s brigade.
