Swiss “Cow Queens” clash in Valais arena
Thousands of spectators gathered in Switzerland’s Valais canton this weekend for the Queens fight, where Herens cows lock horns in a traditional contest of strength and hierarchy.
Rooted in natural herd behavior, the fights see cows push head-to-head until one backs down. The bouts, which can last up to 40 minutes, culminate each year in a national final in Aproz, where winners across weight categories vie for the title ‘Queen of the Queens’— boosting their value and status. Originally, such contests took place only on shared alpine pastures where herds grazed together.
The event, launched in the 1920s, has grown into a cornerstone of Alpine culture, drawing crowds of up to 50,000 and linking farmers with the wider public.
