Watch this clip where a wild camper woke up floating after an overnight tide swallowed her tent while camping by a loch in Scotland.
Wanda Wiggans from Webster Way Hawkinge, UK, was camping with her dog and friend Sam in Kinlochleven when the group unknowingly pitched their tent too close to the shoreline.
Despite being warned about the tide, the campers believed they were safely positioned around 50 metres away from the water on what appeared to be dry land.
But at around 6:30am, a higher-than-normal tide rolled in and surrounded the tent with around two feet of water, causing Wanda’s airbed to rock from side to side while she slept.
Realising the tent was rapidly flooding, Wanda woke her friend and rushed to move their belongings to shore before the water rose any further.
Fortunately, everyone escaped safely with only minor damage to their gear, although they had to wait for the tide to retreat before recovering the rest of the tent and poles.
Wanda later laughed off the experience online, admitting the mistake was a “silly schoolboy error” and a lesson learned through “trial and error.”
She said:
“Recently me and my Hunter was camping with a friend on a loch in Kinlochleven, we was warned about the tide but with my innocence and sense of wonder took a risk of pitching our tent up on a completely dry surface thinking it would be no harm.
“Little did we know that it was a higher than normal tide that morning which meant we woke up to our tent rocking in about 2 foot of water at the 6.30am high tide.
“We managed to carry all of our belongings to shore with minimal water damage. It was a silly schoolboy error or being naive and also very funny to wake up on a water bed.
“Anyway no harm was done to anyone and we left with laughter. Note to self thoroughly check where you are wild camping in Scotland because that could have been an unintended disaster.”
