Swabber-cook Sam sails on Captain Enrico Fisher’s pirate ship Leviathan’s Tooth when they steal the blinking, blood-hungry “Maka O Ke Kai” pineapple from the Sandwich Islands — a cursed fruit that, prophecy says, will make its bearer “King of the World” if carried halfway across the globe by sea. Obsessed, sleepless Enrico drags his dwindling crew through kraken attacks, mermaid ambushes, and Leviathan’s milk to reach landlocked Bechuanaland in the Kalahari, believing it has a bay. They arrive during the 1890s rinderpest drought to find only carcasses and bones; with nothing left but weevil flour, rotten tomatoes, spoiled milk curd, and the cursed pineapple, Sam cooks a final “pizza on top pineapple” that kills the last men, leaves Enrico dying with “Re del mondo” on his lips, and ends with Sam alone as the fruit sprouts one watchful eye in the sand — the rain never comes.
