A major controversy has erupted at Karnataka’s historic Badami Cave Temples after a female staff member was allegedly seen entering the temple premises wearing footwear, triggering a heated argument with a tourist.

A video of the incident, which is now circulating widely on social media, reportedly shows the tourist confronting the staff member inside the heritage site.

The staff member has been identified as Roshani Mustafi, who was allegedly seen arguing with a female tourist after being questioned over wearing slippers inside the temple premises.

According to reports, the tourist objected to the staff member entering the sacred site with footwear and questioned whether staff members were exempt from following basic religious and cultural norms.

In the viral clip, Mustafi was purportedly heard telling the tourist that she had “no right to make a rule.” The tourist then reportedly responded by asking whether she lacked “common sense”.

The tourist also allegedly questioned whether entering a dargah with footwear would be considered acceptable, arguing that similar respect should be shown at temple sites as well.

During the argument, Mustafi was reportedly seen calling her supervisor and saying, “Sir, yaha pe log tamasha kar rahe hai” (Sir, people are creating a scene here).

The Badami Cave Temples, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), are renowned 6th-century cave temples dedicated to Hindu deities and Jain Tirthankaras.

The viral video has sparked mixed reactions online. While some social media users argued that the cave temples are heritage monuments and not fully functional places of worship, others insisted that footwear should still be avoided inside such sacred spaces out of respect.

Some users also pointed out that several tourists visible in the video were themselves wearing shoes, questioning why only the staff member was confronted.

The incident has triggered a wider debate online over cultural sensitivity, temple etiquette and rules at protected heritage monuments.
