Beginning: John’s World Before Tourette’s
The movie kicks off in 1980s Scotland, showcasing a witty, soccer-loving fifteen-year-old named John Davidson, who’s living a typical life filled with dreams and aspirations—until one day, his body starts acting up in ways he can’t control. Out of nowhere, he begins experiencing sudden physical tics and uncontrollable vocal outbursts, leaving John and those around him in shock.

Discovery and Diagnosis
Eventually, doctors diagnose him with Tourette’s syndrome, but back in 1983, it’s hardly recognized, and very few doctors really get what it entails. John feels the sting of shock, fear, and a complete lack of understanding from his peers, teachers, and even some family members. His life starts to feel more and more isolating and alienating.

Teen Years: Struggle, Bullying, and Misunderstanding
John’s tics—sometimes involving involuntary swearing and aggressive movements—turn school into a nightmare. Teachers don’t get him; classmates bully him; neighbors react with either horror or laughter. The film doesn’t hold back in showing how Tourette’s impacts social acceptance, identity, and self-worth during those crucial teenage years.

Turning Points and Support
As John matures, he encounters people who show him kindness. He has long, heartfelt talks with caregivers, including Dottie Achenbach (Maxine Peake), while his family struggles to grasp what John truly needs. Gradually, he starts to take charge of his condition, finding meaning in his suffering instead of letting it define him in a negative way.

Transformation From Patient to Advocate
In time, John not only becomes comfortable in his own skin but also steps up as a public advocate for Tourette’s awareness, taking part in documentaries and speaking candidly about the condition with both honesty and humor. Viewers witness his journey from a confused teen to someone who educates and inspires others.
