Revelers risk injury racing down Coopers Hill in Britain's annual Cheese rolling competition
Spectators and competitors gathered at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire on Monday for the annual cheese-rolling contest, where participants race down a steep 180-meter slope chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester. Winners are those who reach the bottom first, as catching the cheese is almost impossible. This year's competition had the added element of sweltering temperatures reaching over 30 degrees, on the hottest May day on record. The race is notorious for its high risk of injury, due to the extreme angle of the hill and competitors are required to acknowledge that they take part at their own risk. The unusual event dates back to 1826, however it is thought to have its roots in a heathen festival to mark the return of spring.
