Tension briefly erupted at the Raybag bus stand in Karnataka’s Belagavi district after two women suspected of attempting to snatch a gold chain were allegedly caught and beaten by members of the public.
According to sources, the incident took place when alert commuters noticed the women allegedly trying to snatch a gold chain at the crowded bus stand.
The suspects, believed to be part of a gang from Miraj in neighbouring Maharashtra, were reportedly caught red-handed during the alleged attempt.
Eyewitnesses said angry members of the public immediately overpowered the two women and allegedly assaulted them at the spot before police intervention.
Following the incident, police reached the area and brought the situation under control.
A case has been registered at Raybag Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Police are also probing whether the accused women were linked to similar chain-snatching incidents reported in and around the area.
