The Assam government has tabled the Uniform Civil Code Assam 2026 Bill in the state assembly. If passed, Assam will become the first state in Northeast India and the third in the country after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to implement UCC. The bill proposes a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, inheritance, maintenance and live-in relationships, sparking major political and social debate across the country.
