The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has reported that May 2026 is exceeding historical tornado averages, with the month not yet over and several active outbreak systems still occurring across fifteen states in the US. According to the 1991-2020 average, around 265 tornadoes happen in the United States during May. This year's tally is nearing that number as we enter the last week of the month. The severe weather event over Memorial Day weekend is anticipated to greatly increase the overall count before the month wraps up. Ongoing tornado watches remain in effect throughout the central and southern Plains.
