Superintendent says he gave clock tape to officers; claims he dreamed of a late night phone call
Leo Frank was visibly nervous when he returned to the stand to answer the coroner's questions.
Asked what kind of elevator floor the factory had at the office level, Frank said it had a solid sliding door. When asked where the elevator had been on Friday night and Saturday, he said he had not noticed. Asked what protection existed against someone falling into the shaft if the door was left open, he replied that there was a bar across the shaft. Pressed again on the elevator's location on Saturday, he repeated that he had not noticed. On Sunday, he said, it was on the office floor.
Gave Tape to Police
Asked what he did with the tape after removing it from the clock Sunday morning, Frank said he gave it to one of the officers.
The coroner then asked who had been at a gathering at his home Saturday night. Frank named Mr. Goldstein and others, then added that Goldstein's wife and Mrs. Isaac Strauss had also been present. Asked what he had been doing, Frank said he was reading the Metropolitan magazine. He confirmed that he had greeted the guests, though he could not recall whether he had risen to do so. Mrs. Wolfsheimer, the coroner noted, had not been there.
On the subject of whiskey, Frank clarified that nothing had specifically been said about it, but that he had remarked he would like something warm to drink, and one of the officers had agreed that a drink would do him good.
Dreamed of Phone Call
Asked about his comment regarding a late night telephone call, Frank said he had told the officers that he dreamed someone had called.
He confirmed that he had looked at the girl when he went to the undertaker's establishment, and said he had not gone into a restroom there. When asked when he first heard the girl's name, he replied that he could not remember accurately.
