स्ट्रेट ऑफ होर्मुज दुनिया का सबसे अहम maritime chokepoint माना जाता है। वैश्विक तेल आपूर्ति का बड़ा हिस्सा और दुनिया के LNG व्यापार का महत्वपूर्ण भाग इसी रास्ते से गुजरता है। भारत, चीन, जापान और दक्षिण कोरिया जैसे देशों की ऊर्जा सुरक्षा काफी हद तक इसी रूट पर निर्भर है। ऐसे में ईरान-यूएस तनाव (Iran-US Tensions) या किसी संभावित सैन्य संघर्ष का असर पूरी वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्था पर पड़ सकता है।
