A massive fire aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s most advanced and expensive nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, has raised serious questions about the U.S. Navy’s preparedness and safety systems. The blaze reportedly began with a small spark in a dryer vent while the carrier was deployed in the Red Sea and quickly spread through multiple sections of the ship. What shocked many was the reported failure of the vessel’s highly sophisticated automatic fire-suppression system at a critical moment. As a result, more than 600 sailors were forced to battle the fire manually for nearly 30 hours. Although no lives were lost, the incident caused extensive damage to the ship and displaced hundreds of crew members.
