In line with the observance of World Environment Day, environmental group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (PNE) protests in front of the ongoing removal of Quirino Avenue’s center island on June 5, 2026, demanding accountability from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) after it suspended the tree-cutting operations for the construction of the Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX). Cathleen De Guzman of the Kalikasan PNE told the Manila Times that aside from the environmental damage caused by the tree-cutting, the construction of San Miguel Corporation project will displace communities residing along the area. De Guzman said that houses along Quirino Avenue, along with their livelihoods, are next in line for demolition.
