A tragic flash flood incident resulted in the loss of a woman's life in Mississippi when her SUV was swept away by rapidly flowing floodwaters in the parking area of Eastbrook Commons shopping center located in Petal, close to Hattiesburg. Onlookers gathered and made frantic attempts to assist the driver — however, the vehicle flipped over during the rescue attempt and was dragged away before anyone could reach her. Dive teams later located her body, while a tow truck and pulley system managed to retrieve the submerged SUV. Authorities reported that nearly 6 inches of rain fell in a very brief period, causing water levels to rise to about 12 feet. The NWS had declared a Flash Flood Emergency for Petal, Hattiesburg, and Purvis. This incident is part of numerous life-threatening events occurring this week as 88 million Americans face a flood risk — and NBC News reported on June 9 that new floods devastated homes and left individuals stranded throughout the Midwest and South this morning. Additional heavy rainfall is anticipated through the middle of the week.
