Royal Marine Commandos, supported by National Crime Agency officers, the RAF, and Royal Navy vessels, carried out a major operation in the English Channel by boarding the Russian shadow fleet oil tanker Smyrtos. The six-hour mission marked the first operation of its kind conducted by UK armed forces and was aimed at enforcing sanctions targeting Russia’s oil exports. Authorities said the vessel will remain under monitoring off England’s south coast while investigations continue. According to officials, the tanker had previously been sanctioned and is believed to be part of a network used to help Russia bypass international restrictions on oil sales.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the operation, stating, “This successful operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fuelling Putin's war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide.” The UK government says it is increasing pressure on Moscow by disrupting revenue streams that help fund the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also welcomed the move, calling for stronger action against Russia’s shadow fleet. The operation highlights growing international efforts to tighten sanctions enforcement and limit Russia’s ability to circumvent economic restrictions imposed since the start of the conflict.
