In 2047, virologist Orochi Hoshiga secretly raised Nagini, a girl he stole as an egg from a Congo snake den, because her blood produces a living cure for Marburg-X and all venoms. As they travel the world seeking snake cults and Ophidian Aggregation Events, Nagini learns she wasn’t born but hatched, and that Orochi massacred her village to steal her. Her only comfort is tamago sushi, which quiets the snake-whispers in her head. In the den beneath the Congo, she cures Orochi’s Marburg-X with her blood, but he kills her to monopolize the cure, believing he can synthesize it. Her death severs the pheromone link holding the snake hive together — all 300 species convulse and die worldwide. Without her living, adaptive peptide, the virus mutates around Orochi’s static version and wipes out humanity. By 2147, Earth is dead and Orochi is the immortal warden, alone and unable to die, talking to Nagini’s cryo-preserved body while snakes no longer exist.
