CDC Alerts: Hot Tub at Vacation Rental Linked to Legionnaires — Inspect Yours Today

A report from the CDC's MMWR released on June 11, 2026, confirmed that a hot tub located at a private vacation rental in western New York was responsible for a Legionnaires' disease outbreak, identified through whole-genome sequencing that linked the outbreak strain to the rental's water system. The property owner initially resisted following CDC recommendations. Legionella bacteria, which flourish in inadequately maintained hot tubs, cooling systems, and water sources, can lead to a serious and potentially deadly form of pneumonia. The CDC cautions that the summer vacation period significantly heightens the risk of Legionella exposure, especially for individuals staying in rentals or hotels where hot tub and pool upkeep can vary greatly. Those aged 50 and above are particularly vulnerable.
