FDA Quietly Moves to Ban Common Food Additives Found in US Snacks

On June 15, the FDA revealed its completed Food Chemical Safety Post-Market Assessment Program and initiated an official review of BHT — butylated hydroxytoluene — and azodicarbonamide (ADA), which are prevalent preservatives and dough conditioners in numerous processed foods across America, including many breakfast cereals, snack items, and bread. BHT is already prohibited in the EU and Japan due to cancer risks. ADA, infamously known as the 'yoga mat chemical,' was removed from subway bread after consumer advocacy. The FDA's official review suggests that both additives might face restrictions or bans in the US within the next two years, impacting a variety of food products consumed by American families every day.
