In 2028, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen will be the first BMW production vehicle with a hydrogen drive system to hit the road. Its powertrain comprises the fuel cell system, hydrogen storage in the new BMW Hydrogen flat storage tank, and an innovative high-voltage battery. The third generation of the fuel cell system enables a particularly compact design as well as a powerful and efficient system. The flat tank system consists of seven interconnected and parallel-connected high-pressure tanks made of carbon fiber reinforced composite material. These are integrated into a robust metal frame. This allows for particularly efficient use of the available space in the vehicle, without any loss of interior space. Another advantage: Models with fuel cell technology can be manufactured on the same production line as other drive systems.
