Hundreds of Argentine fans gathered in Buenos Aires on Monday to watch the Albiceleste squad's second match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Austria, played in Dallas, Texas, where Argentina secured a 2-0 victory.

Footage shows fans' reaction to Argentina's win and the celebration of the record Lionel Messi broke by becoming the top scorer in men's World Cup history at the age of 38.

"Honestly, I experienced it with a lot of tension because the second goal was incredible. I mean, Messi is not of this world, and he is Argentine," fan Lourdes said.

With the two goals he scored against Austria, Messi reached 18 goals with the Argentine national team in World Cups, surpassing the mark set by German Miroslav Klose, who managed to accumulate 16 goals with the German side in World Cup tournaments.

In light of this, the supporters highlighted the Argentine captain's performance. "Messi missed the penalty, but it doesn't matter because he scored two amazing goals. He deserved it. He is a hell of a player and he is ours," fan Betty declared.

Other attendees also emphasised Messi's quality within the tournament. "I can't believe that man can control his emotions, his thoughts in the game. I feel that it is something we all have to learn in life. If we want to be number one at whatever it is, he teaches us every match how to work on the body and the heart," fan Camila stressed.

Supporter Juan mentioned that the game was complicated to a certain extent, noting that it could well have been a quarterfinal. "It was a beautiful match, a key match. Truly tough. Austria set up very well," he pointed out.

The Argentine national team came into the match against Austria with three points after its tournament debut against Algeria. In the battle, the side coached by Lionel Scaloni earned a victory with a hat trick from Lionel Messi.

The Austrian squad was also seeking its second World Cup victory after defeating Jordan in its tournament debut. However, it failed to overcome the Argentine defence and lost by two goals.
