Data from the ISW covering the period between May 5 and June 3, 2026, indicates that Russian forces experienced a loss of 93 square miles of territory in Ukraine, nearly twice the loss recorded in the preceding four weeks when 46 square miles were lost. The Netherlands Military Intelligence and Security Service reported in April 2026 that Russia has incurred around 1.2 million permanent losses, including over 500,000 fatalities. The Economist estimated that more than 100,000 Russian troops perished in the initial five months of 2026, with a kill ratio of approximately five Russian soldiers for every Ukrainian soldier killed. Western officials have verified that since November 2025, Russia has been losing soldiers at a rate exceeding its recruitment capacity each month.
