Clade I mpox is a more severe variant prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, having previously prompted declarations of health emergencies by the CDC and global health organizations. The CDC is concurrently overseeing an Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus in the DRC, having issued a Health Advisory on May 19, 2026. U.S. public health officials are now facing multiple concurrent infectious disease challenges.
