Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton has pleaded guilty to illegally retaining classified information linked to notes he compiled while writing his memoir. Bolton admitted to one count of unlawful retention of classified material after initially pleading not guilty to multiple charges. Prosecutors said the documents included highly sensitive national defence information, some classified at the top-secret level. As part of the plea agreement, Bolton faces up to five years in prison, will pay a $2.25 million fine, complete 100 hours of community service, and cooperate with national security officials by briefing them on the retained material. During the court hearing, Bolton acknowledged his actions and told the judge, "I did, your honor," before adding, "I was sorry for it." The case marks a significant legal development involving the former senior official, who has remained one of Donald Trump's most outspoken critics since leaving the White House.
