Latin Americans mark Pride Month with marches in capital cities
Capital cities in several Latin American countries marked Pride Month with marches on Saturday . Mexico City celebrated the 48th edition of its LGBT Pride march, with 53 organisations and collectives taking part in the demonstration, which ended at the downtown Zocalo square. The event was held as both a celebration and a historic demand for respect for the rights and dignity of LGBT people.
In Santiago, march-goers took to the streets to defend the community's hard-won rights, according to Iguales Chile, one of the organizers.
In Lima, the LGBT community also took part in a march. A January poll by Ipsos for the organization Mas Igualdad found that 55% of respondents support some form of legal recognition for same-sex couples, either through civil marriage (29%) or civil unions (26%), while 49% of people aged 18 to 25 support equal civil marriage. Neither equal marriage nor civil unions have been regulated in Peru to date, according to Mas Igualdad.
