The Indian government has issued a strict notice to Meta-owned WhatsApp over its upcoming 'username' feature, directing the company not to roll it out in India until cybersecurity and impersonation concerns are resolved. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) raised alarms that moving from phone number-based tracking to unique IDs could trigger a massive wave of online fraud, phishing, and identity spoofing of public authorities or financial institutions. Tech leaders like Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma have also warned against the risks of this feature. Meta has been given 3 days to submit a detailed explanation.
