The National Weather Service has issued Excessive Heat Warnings for areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Texas. According to the NWS, exposure to such high heat indices can lead to heatstroke in as little as 15 minutes for those who are unprotected. Concerns are heightened for the Fourth of July holiday weekend as large gatherings are anticipated outdoors. Officials are advising residents to remain hydrated, steer clear of outdoor activities during peak heat hours from 11am to 5pm, and to check in on elderly neighbors.
