The "Military Informant" Telegram channel complained that the tankers were traveling in a defenceless manner, making them easy targets for Ukrainian drone operators because they had no protection from the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Another pro-Russian military blogger, Mikhail Zvinchuk of the "Rybar" Telegram channel, said the Black Sea Fleet had effectively shut itself in at Novorossiysk, limiting its ability to protect commercial shipping.
Ukraine says the operation is aimed at weakening Russia's military logistics by disrupting both land and sea supply routes into occupied Crimea.
