Eating human brains helped spread one of the strangest and deadliest diseases ever discovered.
Kuru was a fatal neurological disease transmitted during mortuary rituals among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. Infected human tissue contained abnormal proteins called prions, which gradually damaged the brain.
The disease became known as the “laughing sickness” because some victims experienced uncontrollable laughter, tremors and loss of coordination.
Even more terrifying, symptoms could remain hidden for years before appearing.
