Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has ended his long-running annual donations to the Gates Foundation, marking a significant shift in his philanthropic plans after nearly two decades of support. Instead of directing Berkshire Hathaway shares to the foundation, Buffett announced that future donations will go to four charities connected to members of his family. The 95-year-old also revealed that his remaining Berkshire shares will be distributed to those foundations by the end of 2034.
The decision comes months after renewed public attention on Bill Gates' past association with Jeffrey Epstein, following the release of US Justice Department files and Gates' testimony before Congress. While Buffett did not mention Gates or Epstein in his announcement, he previously said he had not spoken to Gates since the matter became public. The Gates Foundation thanked Buffett for his decades of generosity, saying it remains financially strong and will continue its global charitable work with support from Bill Gates' long-term funding commitment.
