Deviled Ham — I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night 1968 (USA, Garage-Psychedelic Rock)
In Barrington, Rhode Island, a group of 14- to 16-year-olds came together, united by a fierce desire to form a band. Thus, in 1964, a group called The Ascots was formed, rehearsing in the basement of St. Benedict's School, where they attended. The guys were big fans of The Beach Boys and the surf/hot rod movement in general. In August 1965, they had the opportunity to release the single "Who Will It Be / So Good." Their crowning achievement was opening for The Turtles at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1966. The Ascots disbanded the following year, but quickly reformed under the name The White Wash and even managed to release a single on the Zowie Label in 1968. Their singles then caught the eye of Jeffrey Katz and Jerry Kasenetz, who helped spearhead numerous hits and bubblegum-style acts on the Buddha Label. In 1968, they took the band under their wing and signed them to a one-year contract. They renamed them "Deviled Ham" and signed them to the Super K label to record an album. That same year, the album "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" was released. It featured several covers and original material. After this, the band broke up for good.
