Five years. That's how long the German Army spent turning the Reichswald Forest into a fortress β eighteen thousand bunkers, three defensive lines, minefields, anti-tank ditches, and the finest paratroopers left on the Western Front.
On February 8, 1945, the First Canadian Army walked into those trees. They expected a week. It took thirty days. Twenty miles of mud, concrete, and forest β every yard contested by elite German defenders fighting on their own soil for the first time. And when the Americans couldn't cross the flooded Roer River, the Canadians found themselves carrying the entire weight of the western offensive alone.
What happened inside that forest β the decisions made, the prices paid, the things individual Canadians did when everything went wrong β belongs among the most extraordinary chapters of the war. And almost nobody talks about it.
