A tourist was left stunned after discovering what may be one of the world's most unusual toilets, perched above the Indian Ocean with nothing but the sea beneath it.

Julia Liberra, originally from Germany and now living in Zanzibar, captured the quirky bathroom aboard a traditional dhow boat near Mnemba Island, Zanzibar.

The video shows what appears to be an ordinary toilet inside a tiny cubicle before revealing there is no plumbing underneath – just open water below.

Julia said she had assumed the full-day boat trip would have a normal bathroom after setting off before dawn and spending hours at sea.

Instead, she discovered she had to time her toilet breaks carefully, only using it while the boat was moving to avoid everyone seeing who entered the tiny cubicle whenever the boat stopped.

Julia, who has lived in Zanzibar for more than two years, said it was one of the most unexpected experiences she's had on the island.

She said: "I've been living in Zanzibar for over two years now, and I've experienced many unexpected island moments, but this was definitely one I will never forget.

"I woke up at 5am to start a full-day trip. After a long taxi ride, we finally got on a traditional Zanzibar dhow boat and I was actually excited because we would be out on the ocean until the evening. Surely there would be a proper toilet, right?

"After hours of drinking water and enjoying the ocean, I eventually asked where the bathroom was.

"That's when I discovered the most unexpected toilet I've ever seen.

"At first glance, it looked like a normal toilet... until I looked down and realised the 'flush' was basically the Indian Ocean.

"I could only use the toilet while the boat was moving because whenever we stopped for snorkelling or at the sandbank, everyone could see exactly who was walking into that tiny little bathroom.

"Let's just say I never thought I would have to plan my toilet breaks according to the speed of a boat.

"Island life really comes with unexpected challenges.

"One flush away from the Indian Ocean. The trip was amazing, by the way!"

The unusual loo amused viewers online, with many joking about feeling rushed, wondering what fish might think, and calling it one of the most unique bathrooms they'd ever seen.
