The German guards at Stalag VIII-B had processed thousands of prisoners — French, British, Polish, Serbian. They knew what defeated men looked like. Then the cattle car doors opened, and nearly two thousand Canadians stepped onto the platform. What happened next didn't fit anything the guards had been trained for.
In August 1942, the largest single capture of Canadian soldiers in history arrived at a POW camp in German-occupied Silesia. They were wounded, starving, and fresh off the disaster at Dieppe. The Germans expected broken men. Instead, they got something that would quietly unsettle the camp administration for the next three years — a discipline no punishment could crack, an organization no search could uncover, and a defiance so calm it made the guards question which side of the wire held the real prisoners.
