June 1944. Saipan. Thirty thousand Japanese troops dug into caves, ridges, and tunnels across an island the US had to take. First Lieutenant Frank Tachovsky walked into the stockade at Camp Tarawa, Hawaii, and handpicked forty of the worst-behaved Marines in the 6th Regiment. He trained them to kill in silence, move behind enemy lines for days without support, and steal every weapon the Corps wouldn't give them. Other officers called them trash. The Japanese never saw them coming.
What a platoon of teenage misfits armed with stolen bazookas and bolt-action Springfields accomplished on Saipan was buried for sixty-seven years — until a son opened his father's footlocker and found a story no one had ever been told.
