In June 1944, German intelligence officers emptied the pockets of captured and dead American soldiers. What they spread across the table had nothing to do with weapons or ammunition.
Detailed topographic maps issued to privates. Aerial photographs of the exact beach each man was assigned to cross. A personal compass. Three sealed meals with cigarettes, chocolate, and toilet paper — packed for one man, for one day. In the Wehrmacht, most of these items belonged to staff officers. Some didn't exist at all.
One German officer stared at the pile and said something that would be repeated, in different words, across the next eleven months of war. He said no army he had ever seen would issue these things to a private soldier.
He was looking at equipment. He didn't realize he was looking at the reason his army was going to lose.
