On March 31, 1943, Second Lieutenant Owen Baggett's B-24 Liberator was ripped apart by thirteen Ki-43 fighters over Burma. Eight men were on board. Not all of them got out. And for those who did — the killing didn't stop. Japanese pilots came back around and opened fire on the airmen drifting helpless beneath their canopies.
Baggett was hit, bleeding, and had every reason to be dead. The enemy was convinced he was.
What he did in the next four seconds led to 900 days in Japanese captivity, an offer of hara-kiri from a general, and a claim so unbelievable that his own intelligence officers filed it away without comment. Decades passed before anyone could prove what actually happened in the sky above Pyinmana that morning.
Some stories get buried. Not all of them stay buried.
