The FDA has granted approval for Lipfendra, marking the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor aimed at lowering LDL, commonly referred to as 'bad' cholesterol. This breakthrough provides a novel treatment option for adults who experience persistent high cholesterol levels despite using statins or are unable to tolerate these medications. In clinical trials with over 3,000 participants, Lipfendra achieved a reduction in LDL cholesterol by 56% to 59% compared to a placebo after a six-month period. Merck has set the list price at $315 for a month's supply. This approval may enhance access to advanced cholesterol management as long-term studies on cardiovascular outcomes are underway.
