August 21, 1942. Guadalcanal. Private Al Schmid — a 21-year-old steel burner from Philadelphia — crouched behind a Browning machine gun on the banks of the Tenaru River. Two weeks on the island. Zero combat experience. And an entire Japanese regiment crossing the river toward his position at three in the morning.
The first wave hit the sandbar fifty men deep. Then came the second. Then the third. By the end of the night, only one man was still pulling the trigger — and what he lost during that fight makes the rest of the story almost impossible to believe.
Hollywood turned it into a film. But they left out the part that actually matters.
