Recent findings from the University of St Andrews indicate that carbon dioxide emissions associated with acid mine drainage in metal extraction operations could be significantly underestimated. Researchers analyzed 82 active and historical mining sites in southeastern Spain, revealing that the process of neutralizing acidic mine water has already generated an amount of CO2 comparable to that produced by the region's traditional copper mining activities. The investigation suggests that total long-term emissions could be over ten times higher than the existing carbon estimates for mining, presenting a considerable obstacle to reaching net-zero targets amid rising global metal demands.
