A Spectacled Bear is the only bear species native to South America and is famous for the cream-colored markings around its eyes that often look like spectacles. Found in the Andes Mountains of countries like Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia, these bears live in cloud forests, grasslands, and mountain habitats.
Spectacled bears are excellent climbers and spend much of their time in trees searching for food. Although they belong to the bear family, their diet is mostly plant-based, including fruits, leaves, bromeliads, and roots, with occasional small animals when available.
As important seed dispersers, spectacled bears help maintain the health of Andean ecosystems. Threatened by habitat loss and human conflict, they are one of the most unique and fascinating bears in the world. 🐻🌿⛰️✨
