Athenian democracy began in ancient Athens around 500 BCE and was one of the first systems where citizens voted on major decisions. Unlike today’s democracies, Athens was a direct democracy, meaning citizens gathered to vote on laws themselves instead of choosing leaders to vote for them. Only free men born in Athens could participate, which left out many people, but it was still a groundbreaking idea.
