The state of New York has reported its first documented instance of the Bourbon virus, an uncommon infection transmitted by lone star ticks, as indicated by researchers at Stony Brook Medicine. This case was detected after analyzing blood samples from 107 individuals collected between 2019 and 2024, with one individual exhibiting an eightfold increase in antibody levels, confirming a recent infection. Due to the similarity of symptoms with other tick-borne illnesses and the absence of a standard commercial test, experts suspect that more cases may be overlooked. These results underscore the urgent need for enhanced monitoring, better diagnostic tools, and increased awareness within the clinical community.
