As Germany nears the grim milestone of 10,000 heat-related fatalities in 2026, the country continues to endure a series of heatwaves, as reported by the Robert Koch Institute. Estimates show 9,800 deaths attributed to heat through July 19, with approximately 1,900 occurring in the week of July 13–19 alone. Over 5,400 of these deaths involved individuals aged 85 and older, coinciding with temperatures soaring to nearly 40°C in late June. These alarming statistics have sparked renewed demands for enhanced heat safety protocols in hospitals, care facilities, and public spaces in light of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
