The Southern Theater Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army conducted a joint naval and air exercise on Saturday (1st) near Huangyan Dao, the name used by Beijing for the atoll internationally known as Scarborough Shoal.
According to a statement released by the Chinese military command, the activities took place in the waters and airspace surrounding the shoal, in an area China considers part of its territory. The exercise was reportedly intended to assess coordination among different units and improve the response capabilities of forces deployed in the South China Sea.
