The German high command had a name for the Canadian army: Kolonialarmee. Colonial army. A secondary force. Brave enough — but not the ones who would decide the battle.
In August 1944, the Canadians were given the hardest job in Normandy: break through the strongest German defensive line on the Western Front and close the northern jaw of the Falaise Pocket. The line south of Caen had destroyed every offensive thrown at it for two months. No Allied force had cracked it.
One Canadian general had eight days to find a solution. He built something that didn't exist a week earlier. He attacked at night when every textbook said it couldn't be done. And when that attack stalled, he attacked again — through a defence line that had a copy of his own operational plan.
When captured German officers sat down in interrogation rooms after the pocket collapsed, their testimony didn't match their own briefings. The word they kept using was Unbegreiflich. Incomprehensible. The army they had dismissed had done something none of them could explain.
