UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to intensify efforts to reduce small boat crossings across the English Channel, saying his government will remain focused on tackling people-smuggling networks while maintaining legal pathways for those in genuine need of protection. During a visit to Dover, Burnham said enforcement efforts had been strengthened, with more officers deployed in cooperation with French authorities to disrupt criminal gangs.
Speaking in Dover, Burnham said: "People want to see this issue addressed. We also need to build a system that offers safe routes for people as well, because that also takes away the selling point of the gangs."
He also stated: "I want to deal with the issue rather than play politics with the issue."
Addressing border security, Burnham added: "The public don't like the idea that the border looks like it's not controlled. We need to bring back that control. But also we need to offer support for people who genuinely need it."
Commenting on ongoing enforcement, he said: "Clearly, progress is being made, but we're not complacent." The government says it will continue expanding operations against cross-Channel smuggling gangs.
